Disappointed in Matheson!
I am disappointed in Jim Matheson. Maybe he used to put Utah first. Now he is part of a political machine with misleading ads and mailers. Leading up to the Obamacare vote, I contacted his office frequently by phone and in person. His staff always declined to state his position, saying he was studying the bill. At the very last minute, he withheld his support only because the democrats had enough votes without him. He never came out strongly against the bill. He didn't show leadership to oppose any specific parts of the bill. This is his pattern. Instead of leading out, he goes along to get along.
Matheson is a big government guy. He favors taking our tax dollars to Washington and then sending back a few of them with strings attached, ie. education. Our children wouldn't suffer without the bloated Dept. of Education wasting our money with administrative costs and then giving us back a portion along with a list of mandates. Mia Love would keep our money here in Utah and let us control our own education. Mia wouldn't eliminate student loans, but she would eliminate GOVERNMENT CONTROLLED students loans. Obamacare actually removed private sector student loan options. Matheson and Obama believe government is the answer. Mia Love believes the people are the answer. If you want less government and more freedom of choice, VOTE MIA LOVE!
Mia Love's Conservative Leadership
Mia love is a superb example of a conservative leader with innovative ideas-someone willing to listen to her constituents and their ideas. She is not afraid of hard work to bring about positive results for local families, her community, our state and the nation. During her mayoral tenure, some local citizens approached her requesting a library for Saratoga Springs. Mia loved the idea of having a community library but recognized that her city was not in a position to build a library without taking on additional debt. She felt that taking on debt was not a wise option.
Instead she pledged $10,000 of seed money if the group could organize, get their neighbors involved, raise their own funds and create a library. These citizens accepted the challenge. Mia joined forces with these volunteers and together they held fund raising activities, gathered book donations, etc. It took hundreds of hours and a lot of personal sacrifice but they had a worthy goal and were determined to make it happen.
As the books poured in and the funds accumulated, they looked for a place for their library. There was some unused space in the basement of their city building. They cleaned out the basement, built shelves, and organized their books. These volunteers literally created, built and staffed their library without additional city money or debt. Mia volunteered right along with other library aficionados.

More Government Waste & Fraud? Shocking News!
2. $14 Billion in Jobless Benefits Overpaid in ’11
The unemployment insurance system in America suffers the second highest rate for “improper payments” of any federal program, behind the National School Lunch Program, and overpayments topped $14 billion last year alone.
The overpayments accounted for 11 percent of all jobless benefits paid out by the federal government and states in 2011, according to reports from the U.S. Labor Department.
Of the overpaid funds, most end up in the hands of three types of people: those who aren’t actively searching for a job, those who quit voluntarily, and those who continue to collect after returning to work. All are ineligible for benefits.
A small number of cases constitute deliberate fraud of the system, using fake documents or identities, often involving prison inmates, illegal immigrants or even deceased persons, CNN Money reported.
“Unemployment checks are going to graveyards,” Vice President Joe Biden said in September as the federal and state governments launched an effort to stem the overpayments and collect those already made.
The Labor Department estimates that half of its overpayments are recoverable, but historically only about a quarter of the recoverable overpayments have actually been collected.
When the government finds an overpayment, it often sends a letter demanding that the claimant return the funds. Government attorneys can also seek to recoup the money by setting up payment plans, garnishing wages, or deducting money from income tax refunds. Punishment can also include probation, but jail time is rare.
Last year there were about 2,700 convictions for fraud related to unemployment benefits, according to CNN Money.
Among the states, Indiana was the worst offender for overpayments, dishing out more improper payments in 2011 than correct ones.

Info on Flesh Eating Bacteria...
I received an email today containing some excellent information on flesh eating bacteria called necrotizing fascitis. It's a condition that needs IMMEDIATE medical attention. Hopefully this information will help you understand this rare but deadly condition.
Recognize the Early Signs
Even though it's highly unlikely you'll come down with necrotizing fasciitis, knowing how to recognize the early signs of this or any other disease can make all the difference in your outcome if you ever do.
Necrotizing fasciitis usually begins as a small, painful bump. The bump grows rapidly into a painful bruise. By rapidly, I mean in the course of just an hour or two. The center of the bruise will sometimes turn black in color as the skin begins to die. That's a sure sign you need immediate and urgent care. In the two cases we've been discussing, both women sought treatment on the fourth day after being infected. It goes to show that days, even a few hours, can make a difference.
You may also run a fever, feel dizzy, and experience weakness.
If you see these symptoms, get to the emergency room as fast as you can. You know how I feel about emergency rooms – crowded, impersonal, insanely expensive, and often gathering places for "Typhoid Marys" – so you know I don't say that lightly!
Simple Prevention and Quick Diagnosis Is Your Best Bet
While knowing how to recognize the early signs of necrotizing fasciitis could save either your life or your limbs, knowing how to prevent it is even better.
And, prevention is simple.
A couple of simple precautions are to avoid going barefoot, especially outdoors, and to wear gloves when doing physical labor.
I especially like mechanics' gloves, sold in home centers and auto parts stores for about ten dollars. They're tough, comfortable, form-fitting, dry quickly and are almost impossible to wear out. Wear them not only for any automotive work but anytime you're using tools, handing building materials, or even gardening. I also wear them to guard against germs at the gym or anyplace else I'm going to be touching equipment shared by others.
Anytime you cut yourself or get a scrape, wash and disinfect the wound and the skin surrounding it. Soap and water or alcohol-based hand sanitizers are best. If neither is available, use hydrogen peroxide, rubbing alcohol, colloidal silver, or even distilled spirits (whisky, vodka, etc.)
Effective self-care for deeper or larger wounds includes an Epsom salt bath; regular table salt will do if you don't have Epsom salts on hand. Even a pinprick can be enough to give bacteria an opening into your body. In one case, a gentleman ended up with necrotizing fasciitis from a tiny puncture wound caused by a pine needle on his Christmas tree.
Another point to remember is to discuss sterilization and hygiene before any surgery, whether in-patient or outpatient. Sadly, a number of these infections start in hospitals.
Necrotizing fasciitis is rare. If you're careful to treat your injuries properly, you'll go a long way to preventing even the faint chance that you might develop a flesh-eating condition. Perhaps more importantly, the steps toward minimizing the risk of this disease can also help you avoid many other health risks.
It's all part of being ready for anything in these unprecedented times, when self-reliance is key.

Scott Walker Hits Another Home Run!
Governor Walker Breaks New Ground in Higher Ed
Governor Scott Walker (R-WI), already well known for his efforts to curb union power, has now set out totackle an equally big task: busting the higher education bubble.
The problem of college affordability is recognized on both sides of the aisle, but sadly, most efforts to abate the problem - such as increasingfederal subsidies - have only exacerbated it. Walker wants to try a different approach for taxpayers and students in his state.
Last Tuesday, Walker released his proposal to create the University of Wisconsin Flexible Degree Program, a competency-based approach using bothonline learning and traditional college courses. He explained:
This unique competency-based model will allow students to start classes anytime they like, work at their own pace, and earn credit forwhat they already know... Students can use knowledge obtained on the job, through free open courseware, or anywhere else to quickly test out of amodule or a course. A student may move ahead as soon as he or she can prove content mastery.
Obtaining a degree through the University of Wisconsin system will now be more affordable and customizable. By tapping into and giving credit for theknowledge a student has obtained outside the classroom or through another school, the Flexible Degree Program brings down the cost and the timerequired to graduate. If a student proves his mastery of a certain subject, he can obtain credit without taking a full class. Walker's office notes:
Students can demonstrate college-level competencies - no matter where they learned the material - as soon as they can prove that they knowit...
Rather than molding coursework around a set timeframe, these modules can be designed to contain only the knowledge required within a specificcompetency. This could benefit working adults who need to start and pause their studies because of work and personal commitments. It could alsobenefit highly motivated students who are able to move through course materials at a faster pace.
Courses in this new program will be based on competency, not seat time, so students can move on to the next topic when they have mastered the currentmaterial. Students will have broad access to high quality coursework and student services, and they can graduate as soon as they can prove theirmastery of the material...
Students with extensive knowledge from the workplace, free open courseware, or other life experiences will be able to quickly move closer to degreecompletion by having their knowledge assessed and credited.
The classes can also be tailored to allow for a student's busy schedule or career goals. What's more, Walker expects the program to reach eveninternational students, broadening the university's student and revenue base.

Power vs. Principle
I had an interesting conversation with a gentleman this week as I was knocking doors of registered republicans to urge them to vote on Tuesday, June 26th for Dan Liljenquist. Initially he said he was inclined to vote for Hatch because it was all about Hatch's power. " We need his power and influence to get things done in Washington," he said. I've thought a lot about his comment these past two days and realized that this "power" is what this election between Hatch and Liljenquist is all about.
Hatch has been accumulating "power and influence" for 36 years. This power enabled him to assemble a war chest of money well over $10 million dollars, the majority of which came from special interest groups outside of Utah, to convince the Utah voters that we need his influence and power and without it we are doomed. Only with his help can Mitt Romney "fix" Washington.
On the other hand, Dan Liljenquist's motives for running are just the opposite. He has a goal of shifting power from Washington and returning it to the states and to the people where, under the Constitution of the United States, it belongs. I am supporting Dan because I'm sick and tired of Washington's continual power grab--the constant encroachment of rules, regulations and taxes which are stripping the individual of personal freedoms and individual responsibility and enslaving not only us, but our children and grandchildren, with mountains of debt. Hatch is part of the system that got us into this mess and he has supported and created programs and appointments that are eroding our liberties.
I have been more than annoyed the past two days as I have watched the disappearance of most of the 80+ signs I have posted for Dan. Interestingly enough, only Dan's signs are missing. Those of other political candidates remain intact. It seems to be extremely important to Hatch's campaign that he retain his power. Why else would a 78 year old man who has been in Washington 36 years but originally campaigned on the premise - "What do you do with a man who has been a senator for 18 years? Bring him home" be running for office again? Indeed, it is all about the power. And he's not willing to give it up. Power corrupts. You leave someone in Washington too long and he becomes tainted with his own importance and the cronyism that pervades that culture. Unfortunately such is the case with Senator Hatch.
I believe Dan has the commitment and ability to make a difference in the culture of Washington. He will join other fresh, young senators who are willing give up their "elite" benefits and again empower the states and the citizens to make more of their own decisions regarding education, employment, health care, retirement, etc. He is a principled warrior for liberty. I believe it's "Time for Dan". Bring back our power. Send Senator Hatch home!

What About Seniority?
This was posted by Gordon Jones, former senior staffer in the US Senate in the Deseret News. He says "It's time for change. It's time for Dan."
Well, Rusty, I worked as a senior staffer in the Senate in the 1970s, when Utah indeed had two "junior" senators, Jake Garn and Orrin Hatch. And I can tell you that they were far from ineffective. On both defense policy and the environment, nothing moved in the Senate without Jake's involvement. On labor law, legal reform, and social issues like abortion, nothing happened in the Senate without Orrin's involvement. In fact, by the time you got there, Rusty, Orrin Hatch had already been CHAIRMAN of a full committee.
I can point to examples of other senators who have been very effective without seniority. It is a matter of will, dedication, and energy, not a question of seniority. In fact, as senators gain seniority, they tend to lose the "edge" that made them so effective in their "junior" years, relying more on the Good Old Boy network to produce far less satisfactory results.
That has certainly been the case with Hatch.

How To Lower Gas Prices...
Here is an article from the Heritage Foundation Newsletter with some suggestions on what can be done to lower gas prices. Our government representatives need to consider these suggestions seriously and quickly. I'm sure that Senator Hatch will lead out and take steps to help us right away! We should be able to count on him, right?
10 Ways to Lower Gas Prices The average price of a gallon of regular gas is now $3.66, and has been decreasing for eight straightweeks. This is causing some of the President Obama's advisors to declare energy prices an irrelevant issue. Political advisor David Axelrod recently tweeted: "Gas prices have been going down for the past six weeks. You think the GOP will blame the President?"
In those six weeks, the only significant energy policy change at the White House was to make new coal production nearly impossible and thus vastly increase the cost of electricity. So, it is hard to assign this slight dip to the president after a record 75 straight weeks of prices exceeding$3.00. However, it is true that the president is not entirely responsible for gas prices.
Market and economic conditions play a large role. With unemployment creeping back up, new global turmoil and summer travel on the wane due to asagging economy, demand is surely dropping. But that does not mean, and has never meant, that the president's policies or Congressional action does not play any role in gas prices.
After three years of adding regulatory hurdles and blocking exploratory access and development, President Obama's policies are helping keep priceshigher than necessary. Having only three percent of federal land available for oil exploration is not a "market condition."
But we are in luck. There are several steps Congress can immediately take, and President Obama can immediately support, that will help alleviate the pain felt at the pump by American families and would create economic growth, and importantly, jobs.
In a new paper, Heritage's Herbert and Joyce Morgan Fellow, Nick Loris lists ten actions Congress could immediately take that would help improve gas prices in the short term and the long term:
1. Lift offshore and onshore exploration and drilling bans: We remain the only nation in the world that has placed the majority ofits territorial waters off limits to exploration. Congress should lift the ban on exploration in the eastern Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic and Pacific coasts, and conduct more lease sales off Alaska's coasts.
2. Approve Keystone XL: The Keystone pipeline has bipartisan support and continues to be consistently popular, polling at 60 percent in November 2011 and 57 percent in late March. 69 Democrats joined House Republicans on a vote of support in Aprilwith Rep. Dennis Cardoza (D-CA) saying: "I think the president has made a very serious mistake here."
Yet, President Obama continues to block it and the jobs that come with it. Had Obama not delayed approval, up to 830,000 barrels of oil per day would have come from Canada to Gulf Coast refineries by as early as 2013. That's more than we bring in from Venezuela, our fourth largest importer.
3. Require timely environmental review: Environmental review requirements for oil and gas projects to commence on federal lands under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) take too long. Congress should place a reasonable 270-day time limit on NEPA reviews.
4. Permitting process: The processing time for an Application for Permit to Drill (APD) extends well past the 30-day time limit.Loris recommends: "Congress should require the Department of the Interior to honor the law's deadline unless the Interior finds fault with theapplication…[and] should ultimately transition the permitting process to state regulators, who are best able to balance economic growth andenvironmental well-being."
5. Issue leases on time: Rather than implementing an efficient leasing process, the Department of the Interior keeps addingadministrative regulations to make the process more burdensome and bureaucratic. Congress should remove unnecessary red tape and if Interior fails to issue a lease within 60 days, it should be considered issued by default.
6. Allow development of oil shale: Oil shale production in the U.S. could be a global game changer since we hold the largest known reserves in the world. However, 70 percent of those reserves lie beneath federal lands. The Obama Administration has introduced new regulations, timeframes, and significantly reduced the land available for leases. Congress should make permanent the 2008 guidelines for oil shale development in orderto provide regulatory certainty.
7. Stop the land grab: Through Secretarial Order No. 3310, the Department of Interior is unilaterally and arbitrarily classifyingfederal land areas as "Wilderness" or "Wild Lands" restricting access to new drilling areas, preventing production on existing leases and halting economic growth. Congress should permanently block Secretarial Order No. 3310 and any similar designation should require congressional approval.
8. Implement 50/50 revenue sharing: States receive 50 percent of the revenues generated by onshore oil and natural gas production onfederal lands and Congress should apply this allocation offshore as well. This would encourage more state involvement in drilling decisions and helpstate economies, whether by closing a deficit or aiding coastal restoration and conservation.
9. Prohibit greenhouse gas and Tier 3 gas regulations: In 2010, Interior suspended 61 leases in Montana alone because environmenta lgroups charged that the energy production would contribute to climate change, demonstrating the need to permanently prohibit any federal agency fromunilaterally regulating greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, the proposed Tier 3 gas regulations to lower the amount of sulfur in gasoline arecostly with no measurable benefits. Congress should prohibit the implementation of these regulations. Unelected bureaucrats should not hold such powe rover the economy.
10. Repeal the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS): Soon, refiners will be fined when the amount of ethanol mandated exceeds the amount that can be refined for use but the mandate requires production of cellulosic ethanol, which no companies have been able to viably produce commercially. As a result, refiners paid more than $6 million in waiver credits or surcharges in 2011. It is an economic and environmental disasterand must be repealed.
President Obama is keen to accept credit for the windfall of oil production in North Dakota and in other private areas outside federal control, where jobs are plentiful and unemployment has plummeted. Meanwhile, production on federal land is decreasing and regulatory conditions are worsening. Itwould be to the president's benefit to embrace some or all of these reforms that could immediately help American families filling up the minivan.Another 75 weeks with gas prices over $3.00, and household goods and food costing more as a result, will not help an already anemic recovery.

Looks Who's Endorsing Hatch...and who's not!
Orrin is running endorsement ads from Jake Garn (who stepped down after 18 years, at the age of 60), from Norm Bangerter (who stepped down after 8 years, at the age of 59), and Jim Hansen (who stepped down after 20 years, at the age of 70).
These guys knew when to quit.
It is telling that Hatch has no endorsements from the present generation. It's Time for Hatch to join his pals.

Memorial Day-Don't Forget Our Soldiers!
"This Memorial Day, I’m drawn more than ever to the words of Abraham Lincoln. Speaking in his Gettysburg Address, he said, “It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us -- that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion -- that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain -- that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom -- and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.”
Those beautiful words describe not only the incredible price American soldiers pay for our freedom, but also the responsibility that we owe to those soldiers to make sure their sacrifice was not in vain. Everyday, “We the People” are charged with making sure freedom is not lost in this great country. Do you want to be the generation that allowed freedom to perish? That allowed the greatest nation in the history of the planet to fail? I for one am not going to sit silently and wait for someone else to do something about it. The time for action is now."

I agree that we need to do all we can right now to preserve freedom which includes working hard to support those running for office who will bring a new surge of committment and hard work to limit the over reach of government into our lives and preserve our liberties. The current government establishment, including Senator Hatch, is out of control and caught up in their own power. It's time for We The People and new representation. Let's all support the new stripling warrior, DAN LILJENQUIST!

Felix Frankfurter said “We have enjoyed so much freedom for so long that we are perhaps in danger of forgetting how much blood it cost to establish the Bill of Rights.” My grandfather and two of my uncles served in Word War II to defend freedom and liberty in far off lands. I – like many of you – have been to Arlington national cemetery where over 300,000 of our nation’s heroes are buried.

Gordon Jones Responds To Aunt Bethie
Since I have been wearing the Dan Liljenquist tee shirt and assisting at some of his events, people have been coming up to me and sharing with me their stories, letters and experiences relating to the Hatch vs. Liljenquist choice. I have decided to post them here for others to read. My thanks to Gordon S. Jones of Draper, Utah for sharing this letter from "Aunt Bethie" and his response to her niece. The original letter is long, over seven pages, so I have selected some excerpts. "The following letter was sent to a neighbor of mine. It is
from an aunt to her niece, explaining her support for Senator Hatch. My
neighbor, knowing of my experience in Washington
and my familiarity with Utah
politics for the last 40 years, asked me for my take on the arguments presented
by her aunt...
Having prepared this response to my neighbor, it occurred to
me that it might provide a general statement that would be helpful to others.
It is in that spirit that I pass it along.
Aunt Bethie's remarks are in Roman type. Mine are in italics.
---Dear Niece,
Hatch’s record of
endorsing liberal incumbents and trashing conservative challengers is long and
consistent. He did it with Olympia
Snowe. He did it with all of the conservatives who won in 2010. He did it
repeatedly with Specter. He did it with Mike Lee (another turn-about: Lee does
not endorse him this year). Privately, he did it with Richard Mourdock in Indiana , though he has
now sent Mourdock $10,000.

I have had many conversations with him and his staff over
the years. I have heard the back story of many of his votes that
people find controversial, and I have been tutored in the complicated process
that occurs back in Washington .
I have had thousands
of conversations with Hatch and his staff over the years on matters of politics
and policy. I do have to say that his staff never tried to give me “back-story”
explanations of his votes for the Department of Education, NCLB, Medicare Part
D, CHIP, TARP, of his support for taxpayer funding for embryonic stem cell
research, his vote to make possession of firearms illegal using the Commerce
Clause arguments that Obama is using today to defend the Individual Mandate in
Health Care. They did not bother to give me that “back story” because they knew
that I knew at least as much about how the Senate operates as they do, and they
knew that I would not be as easily “tutored” as Aunt Bethie.
Senator Hatch will be the chairman of the Finance Committee
if he wins and if we take back the Senate, and if we don't, then he will be the
ranking minority member of that committee, which is powerful in and of itself.
The legislation to defund or repeal Obama Care will come out of that
committee....a balanced budget proposal will come out of that committee, just
to name two of the more pressing issues. Why on earth
would we kick out someone poised to lead that committee?!! For the next 6
years [we] will have another junior senator, who will be
stuck onto some minor committee, and it will take him years to work his way
even onto the Finance Committee, and more years to have any chance of becoming
Chairman. It's ludicrous.
What is ludicrous is
to think that a single Senator is all that important. If Hatch goes down, the
worst we will get is Mike Crapo at Finance, a much more reliable conservative
(for example Mike Crapo never proposed a health care bill with an Individual
Mandate in it, as Hatch did). There has been only one Indispensable Man in our
history, and Orrin Hatch is no George Washington.

Senator Hatch has been there a long time, it's true, but how
long is too long? (36 years is too
long!) He is consistently rated in the highest percentile by conservative
watch dog group...
(I do some of those
ratings, and I know exactly how reliable they are, and what they are used for.
They are very good at distinguishing between Rs and Ds, but not so good at
distinguishing between moderates and conservatives. Besides which, Hatch’s
record is not all that good. On the ACU
Index, for example, his Lifetime rating is only in the high 80s, which puts him
among the lowest Republicans. These last two years, since Bennett’s travails,
he has repented and gotten 100%, but is this a deathbed conversion?)

So, to sum up....I ask people who have a problem with some
of Senator Hatch's votes over the years....or the fact that he has served in
the Senate for many years......FORG ET
THAT, and ask yourself. WHO HAS THE BEST CHANCE TO BRING ABOUT THE
DRASTI C CHANGES THAT MUST HAPPEN
TO SAVE OUR COUNTRY......HATCH OR LILENQUIST? WHO HAS THE
POWER, THE CLOUT, THE INFLUENCE, THE SENIORITY?
So, to sum up, I ask
people to look at the record of Orrin Hatch for the last 18 years, and compare
it with (a) what he did in the first 18 or (b) Dan Liljenquist’s record in
three years in the State Legislature (which is three years more experience in
government than Hatch had when he was elected—or Mike Lee for that matter).
Look at the record,
and forget the incantations of the magic words of Seniority, Clout, Influence,
Power, What the Senator can do for Utah .
If the question is which man will “bring about the drastic changes that must
happen to save our country,” is it more likely that Hatch will suddenly change
his spots or that someone not soaked in the Washington pickle brine will
actually shake up the system (as Hatch did on his first two terms)? That
question answers itself.
My state delegate
supported Hatch “because he helped us get the TRAX line here in Draper.” Well,
Hatch can only get TRAX money for Draper because he agrees to support taxpayer
money for the Big Dig in Boston, for the Bridge to Nowhere in Alaska, for the
Murtha Airport in New York, and an Interstate Highway in Hawaii! Hatch can do
nothing “for” us without doing it “to” someone else. It is this system of
mutual back-scratching that has gotten us into the fiscal mess we are in.
Forget these
incantations of power recited by the Hatch campaign, and apparently so
persuasive to Aunt Bethie and others. Vote for the man who will make a
difference, who has made a difference."

You can register to vote by going to www.secure.utah.gov/voterreg. Do it right away and be certain to register as a Republican so you can vote for DAN LILJENQUIST in the Republican Primary on June 26, 2012 or by mail starting next week. NO ONE should be in the United States Senate for 42 years. NO ONE-not even Orrin Hatch. It's time for a new young warrior to fight the conservative fight. DAN'S THE MAN!

Is It Time For Hatch To Pass The Torch?
I believe I was elected to be a delegate because I told my precinct members that I stood for limited government, individual liberty and personal responsibility. Our caucus took a straw poll and the group was split about 50/50 on whether Senator Hatch should be re-elected. So I entered this process committed to my principles and committed to do everything I could to explore the various candidate's positions, backgrounds and records. I have dedicated many hours of time to this process and so far I believe that I have personally met with and listened to every candidate, some several times. I was also determined throughout this process to be open-minded and to seriously evaluate without previous prejudice. This exploratory process has been very revealing. And as I have evaluated voting records and positions, I realized that even though I considered myself pretty well-informed, I was not aware of the seriousness of the situation and the urgent need to make changes in the bureaucracy of the Washington environment.
This week I have found myself feeling saddened and recognized I was going through a mourning period. I feel sad that the country I grew up in, won't be the country my grandchildren grow up in. I feel sad that we are saddling the upcoming generations with our selfish debt burden and no economic means to pay for it. I'm saddened that as citizens we are steadily embracing a socialistic model--that the government should take care of us. This will reduce freedom and opportunity for growth and result in a lower standard of living for all. I recognized it was time to say goodbye to Senator Hatch and I was mourning the loss of a iconic grandfather figure.
Senator Hatch is a wonderful person who has been an example of family values and good living. He has done many excellent things for his consituents and legislative co-workers. He has worked to help keep Hill Air Force Base open and has been an example of civility throughout the years. I express my thanks for his many efforts to serve our state. Thank you, Senator Hatch.
If the majority of the senators are republicans...If the senate doesn't vote to change their seniority rules like the house did...If Mitt Romney is elected president...If Senator Hatch doesn't have a stroke, heart attack or other disabling health issue..If the stars align just right...If, If, If...Hatch may be the chairman of the senate finance committee. Is this the sole reason that we should re-elect him? Right behind Hatch in seniority on the finance committee is Senator Mike Crapo from Idaho. He would be an excellent chairman. His vote is consistently more conservative than Hatch's. Here are some votes.

Hatch co-sponsored and voted for the Dream Act on 12/14/07. He voted for English as the official language but against English as the common language. He voted to expand entitlements and debt with the passage of Medicare Part D. He supported further intrusion into our state educational system with No Child Left Behind. Additionaly, the Natl'Assoc. For Gun Rights does not consider Sen. Hatch to be a defender of Second Amendment Rights.
At his event, Hatch was praising Ben Bernanke as a brilliant, upstanding man. I asked him if he was concerned with Bernanke's quantitative easing, which basically devalues our dollar by printing more money to cover our debt. He said that Bernanke surrounds himself with brilliant economists and we need to trust him. This easing undermines the very economic foundation of our country! I was shocked at Hatch's response.
Later I asked him if he regretted his votes to confirm Justice Ruth Bader Binsburg, Cass Sunstein and Eric Holder. Ginsburg recently commented that Egypt should pattern their constitution after South Africa, rather than our Constitution. Sunstein and Holder have both done massive damage to our constitutional foundation in the current administration. He ignored Sunstein and Holder and proceeded to defend Justice Ginsburg telling us he was the one who championed her nomination because "even though she is liberal, we know how she will vote." I disagree with Hatch that "advice and consent" means confirming anyone the President wants. The senate's job is to vet appointments and make sure appointees uphold the Consitution!
We are at a critical crossroads in our country. The tenatcles of socialism are spreading deeply into our government and culture. Mr. Hatch has been in Washington so long that he has become a part of the culture and doesn't recognize its strength, nature and all-invavsive power. He has been part of a system that has given away congressional power to the executive and judicial branches and he hasn't stood up to stop it. He is now part of the problem, not part of the solution. It's sad but true.
I was diappointed by Hatch's recent comment, that a group that had the courage to expose his voting record, stood up for principles they believe in and happened to disagree with him, are despicable. He said..."these people are radical libertarians. I despise these people." True conservatives do not attack individuals for their beliefs. That is a tactic of liberals. It's sad that Senator Hatch tarnished his statesmanlike reputation. It is also unusual that no one from the current Utah delegation to Washington has endorsed Hatch. You will note that even Governor Herbert has not endorsed Senator Hatch.
It is time to do the difficult thing and make the hard choices. The status quo has not worked and we are in trouble. We need to send new, strong, committed warriors back to Washington to shake things up, fight against the encroaching socialism, replace federal bureaucracy with state's rights and cut spending. Those who have been there holding the torch in the past can't change a system they are entrenched in. We must bid a sad but grateful farewell to Senator Hatch. It's time for Hatch to pass the torch!
Fortunately for Utah, the delegates to the Republican State Convention, gave the people the opportunity to replace Senator Hatch with a younger, dynamic, conservative leader who can join with Rand Paul, Marco Rubio, Mike Lee and others to change the direction of Washington. His name is Dan Liljenquist and he has the business experience as a turn-around specialist and the legislative experience to reform unsustainable entitlements. Most of all he has the COURAGE to stand up and tackle our difficulat fiscal problems because he has no strings attached and he doesn't owe favors. 93% of his compaign funds are not coming from outside the State of Utah. As Utahns, let's control our own destiny and let's choose our own senator. Senator Hatch has had 36 years of chances. Let's give this opportunity to DAN LILJENQUIST!
